Two firms shuttered after tax avoidance scandal

Two firms from Lancashire have told to shutter their doors in the wake of a tax avoidance scheme they were caught with their hands in the cookie jar.

Vela Contracting Ltd and Apus Contrating Ltd, both trading under the Zeva brand – were found to have been entering the cash made by their employees as so-called ‘expenses’ in order to exempt the money from taxation. Workers had no choice as they were entered into the scheme without their knowledge.

This is where it gets hairy – Zeva sent these expenses to a secondary company, known as UKPA, in order to ‘verify’ the cash; this second company would claim around 30 per cent of these bogus expenses as service charges. This would drop the wages of these workers below the National Minimum Wage – something that got the Gangmasters Licensing Authority involved.

The GLA investigated, discovering that Vela had also been withholding wages from its employees by refusing to pay holiday pay after they left the firm.

So here’s something that will blow your mind: UKPA, Vela Contracting, and Apus Contracting were all owned by just one person, a bloke named Gary Butterworth. This fine example of a man did his best to disassociate himself from the day-to-day operations of his firms by restructuring them through a Russian nesting doll of other firms, all registered offshore, yet the GLA found that the money trail ended up back in Butterworth’s pockets every time.

The GLA of course has told Butterworth to jog on and to take his bogus business practices with him. I for one can only hope that the door doesn’t hit his arse on the way out. This magnificent bastard has some serious bollocks, and I’d very much like to see him nailed to the wall for all this chicanery and foolishness that he tried to get away with.

Honestly, did he think himself smarter than anyone else? And what about his poor workers? Taking advantage of them like that – it’s immoral and it’s unethical. I don’t know how this man sleeps at night. Well, I know how he sleeps: on massive sacks of untaxed cash stolen from his workers and kept from the Treasury.
