HMRC says tax resolution pilot scheme a ‘huge sucess’

The taxman’s Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme has been declared to be a ‘huge success’ so far, according to new reports from HM Revenue & Customs.

The ADR scheme, a pilot programme that was institute to provide quick tax issue resolution for small businesses, contractors, and sole traders, will now become part and parcel for HMRC. There were more than 400 applications over the two year life of the trial, and the feedback for the scheme has been good overall, according to the taxman.

ADR uses mediation between the taxman and the individual in order to come to fair decisions that will satisfy both parties, according to HMRC’s director of local compliance, Richard Summersgill. The number of disputes that ended up going to tribunal were reduced by a significant margin, Mr Summersgill said, adding that the taxman is now thinking of providing larger and more complex cases with access to ADR mediation.

Calling it ‘fair and even-handed’ in its ability to resolve a tax dispute between individuals  or small businesses and the taxman, the HMRC local compliance director said that the ADR scheme saves not just time and frustration but also works to keep costs down as well. In the current economy, where every penny counts, not having to shell out excessive wads of cash to deal with a tax dispute can make the difference for the success or the failure of many small businesses, contractors, or freelancers.
