Website director seeks to dispel HMRC’s monstrous reputation

A north London website director has chosen to stand up for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, proclaiming that the taxman isn’t nearly as monstrous as believed.

Bill Little, 39 years of age, filed his tax return late in 2012. As a result he, like the more than one million others at the time, was fined by HMRC – but his story doesn’t stop there.

In fact, Mr Little was able to get his £100 penalty refunded to him from the taxman, and it didn’t involve anything underhanded such as tax avoidance – he simply demonstrated to HMRC that there was no way that he could complete the return, as he was bedridden on the 31 January 2012 deadline. While he does admit that his mistake was in waiting to the last minute due to not being organised enough, thanks to a note from his doctor verifying that he had an illness lasting ten days, HMRC refunded his penalty – albeit two months after the fine was originally levied against him.

Mr Little wanted to come forward with his story as the tax return deadline comes and goes in an effort to dispel some of the poor feelings that HMRC can elicit in many harried taxpayers that feel the taxman is unnecessarily harsh and demanding by demonstrating that they can be fair and understanding in situations such as his that warrant it. Mr Little added that he had certainly learnt his lesson as well, and has sorted his accounts out in time for this year.
