Employment market for accountants currently challenging

The employment market for contractor accountants is incredibly challenging due to the economic landscape, but experts say there are some things you can do to improve your chances, such as strategic networking or simple dogged persistence.

For those finance professionals looking to score employment within the City of London, there are several factors that come into play in regards to how employable you may or may not be. According to some recent research, the best qualification to have that will maximise your chances is that of Associate Chartered Accountant, a qualification that can be obtained through the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

The industry body says that not only does an ACA qualification grant the bearer a variety of business and finance knowledge, it also provides experience in applying these skills in a practical environment with an additional focus on both professional skills development and ethics training. The downside to earning an ACA qualification is that completion usually only comes after a three year course of study, which may be little help to someone looking for a more immediate boost to their employment prospects.

Interestingly enough, passing an MBA can oftentimes make less difference to your employability than an ACA. The market for those who have passed a CFA exam is similarly bleak in comparison, with industry experts reporting that with around 27 CVs for every one job opportunity, it does little to differentiate you from other applicants.

You simply can’t leave anything to chance in such a challenging work environment, employment experts say. Accountants with the proper mix of qualification, experience, and skills are in a better position to secure success in the jobs market.
